Matthew Perry has spoken candidly about his relationship with Julia Roberts in the media and explained why it ended so tragically.

The Friends actor said that Julia was invited for a guest appearance in season two’s post-Super Bowl episode, which is how their brief affair came about in his new autobiography, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

The 53-year-old told how he sent the brunette beauty three dozen red roses and a message saying, “The only thing more thrilling than the thought of you doing the program is that I finally have a reason to give you flowers” in an effort to win over the actress.

The plan was successful. Julia sent Matthew an unending supply of bagels in exchange for agreeing to participate in the show.

Speaking of their three-month courtship, Matthew related how the infatuated couple excitedly exchanged daily faxes.

“I would sit by my fax machine three or four times a day and watch the piece of paper progressively disclose her next missive. I remember being so ecstatic that on some nights I would be out at a party flirting with a beautiful woman and cutting the conversation short so I could dash home to see whether a new fax had arrived.

“I was grinning like some 15-year-old on his first date,” he said.

Matthew added: “After that we could not be stopped: five-hour conversations here, four-hour conversations there. We were falling; I wasn’t sure into what, but we were falling… I did let her in, both figuratively and literally, and a relationship began. We would already be a couple by the time we started filming the Friends Super Bowl episode.”

The American-Canadian actor broke up with the woman after a brief romance because he thought he was “unlovable.”

Matthew recalled the traumatic event and added, “I was single two months later. The stress of dating Julia Roberts was too much for me. I had been convinced she would end our relationship for a long time. Why wouldn’t she? I was broken, bent, and unlovable; I was not enough and I could never be enough.

So I broke up with the gorgeous and intelligent Julia Roberts rather than go through the pain of losing her. She may have thought she was slumming it with a TV person, and now that TV guy was splitting up with her. The confused expression on her face is beyond my ability to describe.
