Microsoft on Monday verified an Axios article that described layoffs across several businesses.
According to a Microsoft representative, “like all firms, we examine our business goals on a regular basis and make structural adjustments accordingly.” In the upcoming year, “We will continue to invest in our business and hire in important growth areas.”
It’s unknown how many workers were let off, although Axios said that there were fewer than 1,000.
As a result of budget cuts and sharp drops in stock values, tech behemoths Snap and Oracle, among others, have reduced their workforces. Apple and Meta are two companies that have slowed or stopped hiring.
Microsoft announced in July that it would be eliminating a small number of positions as part of a “strategic realignment” in a few key areas of the business, but added that it still intended to add to its overall workforce.
At the end of June, Microsoft had 221,000 employees, up 40,000 or 22% from the same time the previous year. According to figures compiled by GeekWire, it was the highest annual growth in employment in Microsoft’s history.
