Disney gave fans a sneak peek at the upcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid last month. Halle Bailey will play the title role. As we impatiently anticipate the movie’s theatrical debut, Disney has now revealed the first poster for the picture, delivering some underwater enchantment.

“Words can’t express how incredibly honored I feel to play the mermaid of my dreams,” Bailey wrote on Twitter as she expressed her joy.

The footage from the trailer that viewers have previously seen is referenced in the poster. Ariel is portrayed by Bailey as she sits on a seaside rock. One of Ariel’s main ambitions is to one day enter the surface world, and the poster depicts her looking up towards the surface of the ocean with a beam of light shining on her and indicating her destination. The poster’s various shades of blue readily convey the aquatic setting of the film, bringing viewers into Ariel’s world. Ariel’s hair flowing behind her adds to the undersea feeling.

The Little Mermaid will once more tell the story that most viewers are already accustomed to. The story will center on Ariel, the eldest child of King Triton (Javier Bardem), who is utterly enthralled by the human race. She falls in love with Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), a human she rescues from a shipwreck, and she makes it her mission to find him again in the surface world. Ariel quickly encounters resistance from King Triton, though, and finds herself embroiled in yet another dispute with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy).

With 104 million views in the first few days of release, the movie’s teaser trailer has stirred up a lot of interest. It has had about 24.8 million views since then. With her version of “Part of Your World,” Bailey, one half of the vocal duo Chole x Halle with her sister, astounded the audience and served as a beautiful beacon for young Black girls who could see themselves reflected on the screen. As she added locs to Ariel’s hair, Bailey was also able to accomplish that for herself.

Rob Marshall is the remake’s director, and Jane Goldman and David Magee wrote the script. The soundtrack will include four new songs written by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda in addition to the original tunes. Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, a brand-new character, round out the supporting cast.

On May 26, 2023, The Little Mermaid premieres in theaters. Look at the flyer below:
