Apple has extensively marketed Apple Intelligence since its announcement in June, but the results have been dismal. Until now.
On Wednesday, Apple announced the release of iOS 18.2, which includes some of the most anticipated AI capabilities in iOS 18, such as ChatGPT integration for Siri and Writing Tools, the option to create your own emoji with Genmoji, and the Image Playground app, which generates images from text prompts.
If you own an iPhone 16, you receive Visual Intelligence, a visual search tool that allows you to retrieve information from anything you aim your camera at, like as text, food, locations, and more. Consider Google Lens, but for Apple.
As long as you have a compatible Apple Intelligence device, you may download iOS 18.2 now and enjoy all of the latest AI capabilities. Here’s everything you should know.

What iPhone models support Apple Intelligence?
Every iPhone model after the iPhone XS and iPhone 11 can run iOS 18, albeit only a few of the most recent devices enable Apple Intelligence. This is every iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.

As previously stated, only iPhone 16 users will receive Visual Intelligence, an AI-powered visual search capability.
Apple Intelligence is also compatible with iPad and Mac versions that use the M1 chip or later.
Do these six things before installing iOS 18.2.
You don’t have to take all of these steps to download iOS 18.2 on your iPhone, but they will make the process much easier:
- Back up your iPhone. You never know what could go wrong when updating, so keep a backup. On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then hit Back Up Now.
- Update to iOS version 18.1.1. This will make the update go more smoothly than moving from iOS 18 to 18.2.
- Recharge your iPhone or connect it to power. You don’t want your battery to die while you download a new software update, so keep it charged to at least 20% or simply connect it into power while updating.
- Connect your iPhone to a reliable Wi-Fi network. You can download iOS 18.2 via mobile data, but it will be slow and may fail if your connection is poor.
- See if your iPhone has enough storage. Every iOS software update requires enough storage to download and install. If you’re running low on capacity, go to Settings > General > iPhone capacity and delete huge files and apps. You can also download iOS 18.2 from your computer, which does not require you to free up space on your phone.
- If you haven’t already, sign up for the Apple Intelligence waitlist. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, then press Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist. It should take you a few hours to get approved. To utilize Genmoji and Image Playground, you must first join the waitlist.
To experience Apple’s new AI, you must have an eligible device running iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 or MacOS 15.1. (On the iPhone side, that includes the current iPhone 16 models as well as last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.) You’ll also need to join the queue in the Settings app, but Apple Support claims it normally just takes a few hours to acquire access. Once accepted, you will receive a signal that it is ready to activate on your device.

How to Download iOS 18.2 on Your iPhone
Now that you’re ready, it’s time to download iOS 18.2. If you’re upgrading from iOS 18 or iOS 18.1, the process should be rather simple. All you have to do is navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and click Update Now. To request the update, enter your passcode and agree to the terms and conditions, then wait for iOS 18 to download and install. When your phone resets and boots back up, you should be on iOS 18.2.

It’s out! Apple began pushing out the iOS 18.2 update today, December 11. More Apple Intelligence features will be released in the coming months, the company added.
