Sandra Bullock believes the film business is no longer “brave enough” to produce a third Speed film.
Bullock joined Keanu Reeves and director Jan de Bont for a Q&A after an anniversary screening of the film yesterday (October 8). This was the first time they’d addressed the 1994 action film on the same stage.
The occasion also marked Bullock’s rare comeback to public life, as she had been mostly absent since the successful publication of The Lost City in summer 2022 and the death of her boyfriend Bryan Randall the previous year.
The debate shifted to the possibility of developing a sequel. “The geriatric version.” It won’t be quick,” Bullock joked. “All of this occurred because of the insane dude [de Bont] with the greenish jacket over there. He’s so sweet and lovely now, and I think, ‘That’s not the guy I remember.’ But he was the one who brought the energy and the concept together, recognized what the audience needed, and demanded it from everyone, so everyone stepped up to perform it.
“So, what movie would make Jan’s mind and brilliance happy?” It would need a lot from everyone. I’m not sure whether we’re still in an industry that can accept it and be bold enough to do it. Perhaps I am mistaken. If he can’t get [what’s on his mind] to the audience, he’s failed, it seemed. I’m not sure what we could accomplish that would satisfy the crowd.
In 2022, Bullock said that she was “still embarrassed” to have featured in Speed 2, telling TooFab that the notion “makes no sense”.
“That’s one I wished I hadn’t done, and no fans came around, that I know of,” Bullock said of the picture, adding that she doesn’t know of anybody who has appreciated it after rewatching it.
“I’m still embarrassed I was in it,” she said. “I’ve been really outspoken about it. Makes no sense. Slow boat. “Slowly approaching an island.”
