Tina Turner spent decades of her life in the lovely Swiss village of Küsnacht.

The famed Tennessee-born singer, who died Wednesday at the age of 83 from natural causes, moved to the municipality after meeting music entrepreneur Erwin Bach.

The pair met in Germany in 1986 and moved to Switzerland together in 1994, when Bach took a job directing EMI Records’ Swiss operations.

Turner married in 2013, and later that year she took up her American passport, allowing her to buy property in her new country. (Switzerland has prohibited nonresidents from buying property since the 1960s.)

The “Best” performer and her husband spent $76 million on a vast villa in Küsnacht overlooking Lake Zurich in early 2022, less than two years before her death.

The sprawling estate includes ten distinct structures spread across five acres, as well as a swimming pool, boat dock, and its own private pond.

Turner was able to live her life like an ordinary citizen thanks to Küsnacht, and she was frequently seen “doing her own shopping, standing in line at the post office, and exercising outdoors,” according to the New York Times.

Turner, although being one of the world’s most famous entertainers, was recognized throughout the tiny hamlet for being down-to-earth.

“She was a cheerful, very open and kindhearted person,” said Severin Silvestri, manager at Rico’s restaurant, where Turner and Bach frequently dined.

“She was smiling as she passed by. “She could tell we were looking at her, but she was always very discreet,” said Christine, a local who would only give her first name to Reuters.

And the Grammy winner was a great supporter of her chosen community.

On her 75th birthday in 2014, she contributed a public Christmas light display illuminated with golden wreaths, as well as a rescue boat named “Tina,” which was christened that year.

Roland Roller Frei, a Swiss music producer who worked with the “Proud Mary” vocalist, feels she preferred the anonymity.

“I think it was important for her to find a place where she would be left alone,” he told the New York Times, adding that “I think she appreciated the fact that she was not being pestered by fans every day, but that she could enjoy her retirement in peace.”

Turner told a Swiss journalist in 2014 that one of her favorite aspects of living in the European country known for its Alps was the “fresh air,” adding, “It’s clean, and I feel like I’m really breathing in fresh air.”

She also stated that she felt safe enough to go out in public without being accompanied by security.

Following her passing, residents visited Turner’s home to lay flowers and express their sympathies.

“With Tina Turner’s death, the world has lost an icon,” tweeted Switzerland’s president, Alain Berset, on Wednesday. “My thoughts are with the relatives of this impressive woman who has found a second home in Switzerland.”
