The Madden franchise of EA has predicted who would win Super Bowl LVII. The Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts (No. 1) is on the left, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes (No. 15) is on the right.
Looking to place a Super Bowl wager but haven’t kept up with the 2022-23 season?
According to EA’s Madden football series, a simulation of the game run on Madden NFL 23 predicts that the Eagles will win. The business that has correctly predicted the Super Bowl winner for 13 of the past 19 years (including the exact score in 2015) predicts the Eagles will defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-17.
With 282 passing yards, three touchdowns (two passing, one running), and 88 rushing yards, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is predicted to have a particularly strong day.
The (video) game predicts the following outcomes for the (real life) game:
First quarter: Kansas City will be on the board first, when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes connects with Travis Kelce. Hurts will tie it shortly thereafter with a nine-yard run.
Second quarter: Both teams score field goals, leaving the game tied at 10 as all play stops for a Rhianna concert.
Third quarter: The Eagles come out of halftime energized, scoring two touchdowns from A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. The Chiefs score one of their own, when Isiah Pacheco breaks away for a 21-yard run.
Fourth quarter: Eagles running back Miles Sanders caps the game with a final touchdown, putting it out of reach for the Chiefs.
But, hey, it’s just a video game, right? Who would be interested in listening? Regardless of past performance, the game mainly relies on artificial intelligence during development, which might enhance its capacity for prediction.
The NFL has been compiling data on games and players since 1920, but as part of a program called Next Gen Stats, it began attaching RFID tags to every player’s shoulder pads in 2014. Later, it added the tags to referee jerseys, first-down markers, and the pylons at the border of the end zone. The league was able to gather a wealth of more precise data using those, such as player speed, field position, and movement patterns. That data was thoroughly included into Madden NFL 22, which made its debut in 2021, making the on-screen athletes more lifelike than ever.
But don’t ignore that record. Here is a look at the game’s entire track record if you’d want some historical context. (Finish line? Although it’s a useful tool, don’t rely on it for the over/under.)
