Spotify has developed In Focus, an interactive career advising service for musicians.

According to the music streaming service, the portal was created to “assist artists and their teams in achieving their professional goals.”

Artists can choose from 21 ‘focus’ areas among five Spotify-defined career categories on the ‘In Focus’ platform, including “create, promote, connect, earn, and learn.”

Spotify claims that In Focus will “recommend the tools, resources, and educational materials to help them achieve their goals and make the most of every stage of their career” for each of these five areas.

The Spotify for Musicians team is “on a mission to put artists at the heart of the music industry, offering the tools and information they need to establish healthy fan networks on Spotify,” according to Spotify.

Other products, including as the firm’s playlist submission platform, Canvas, and the Soundtrap Capture app, are all “designed to put greater control in the hands of artists,” according to the company.

Spotify’s ‘Marquee’ function is also listed as one of these tools. Spotify’s paid in-app recommendation feature, Marquee, allows labels to pay money to Spotify in order to directly market priority releases to Spotify subscribers.

Spotify boasts that In Focus “is like an artist manager in your pocket that arms you with the tools and guidance you need to nail each of your professional goals” in a blog post announcing the new education site.

The five Spotify-defined career areas, which include “create, promote, connect, earn, and learn,” provide tools on everything from how to “level up your songwriting” to how to “build your superfans” on the In Focus site.

Sub-sections under the “Earn Revenue as an Artist” category cover topics such as how to sell more merchandise, sell more tickets, earn streaming royalties, generate new revenue sources, and “understand the music business.”

“STREAMING ROYALTIES REPRESENT NEARLY TWO-THIRDS OF THE GLOBAL RECORDED MUSIC BUSINESS. SO LET’S MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM, HAVE THE RIGHT LABEL OR DISTRIBUTOR, AND ARE SET UP TO COLLECT YOUR PIECE OF THAT PIE.” SPOTIFY

“Streaming royalties constitute approximately two-thirds of the global recorded music economy,” Spotify says under the ‘earn streaming royalties’ button. So let’s make sure you know how the system works, that you have the correct label or distributor, and that you’re ready to get your slice of the pie.”

“Rapid developments in media, live performances, and technology are producing more and more options to commercialize,” Spotify notes under the “Create new revenue streams” area. Learn how to diversify your cash streams like never before as an artist.”

“We understand it, the music industry today is complex – demanding artists and their teams to take on more responsibilities than ever before,” said Rob Fink, Senior Brand Marketing Manager, Spotify for Artists.

“We’re continually talking with artists about their biggest questions and objectives in their personal career paths, and In Focus was born out of that input.”

“We aim to take away the uncertainty and assist musicians in focusing on what matters most to them in order to achieve their musical objectives.”
